The Stanley London® Large Boxed Compass with Hand Inlaid Compass Rose is similar to the smaller model. It is a beautiful reproduction of an antique gimbaled brass compass in a beautifully inlaid hardwood box.
Hand inlaying hardwood is an old time-honored art that requires considerable talent, patience, and precision to create a beautiful one-of-a-kind piece.
The inlayer must chisel out the surface of the wood in the shape of the design that will be inlaid, and then precisely hand cut each individual piece of thin wood and fit it into the hollowed out section.
This hardwood box also features a handsome inlaid compass rose made from four different species of beautiful hardwood.
As each compass rose is inlaid into the hardwood box using similar hand tools to those used 200 years ago, each compass is unique and will have slight variations.
The 7 3/4 inches (19.7 cm) diameter compass is fully gimbaled with a solid brass gimbal set.
The gimbaled brass compass is protected by a glass cover.
The corners of the hardwood box have darker hardwood splines to offer additional strength and support.
The hardwood case is 10 1/2 inches (26.7 cm) square, 6 1/2 inches (16.5 cm) tall, and the compass weighs 8 pounds 11 ounces (4 kilograms).
Please check these dimensions before ordering as this is a very large compass, suitable for store and restaurant displays and often too large for a desk.
This compass can be ordered with a custom solid brass plaque to be mounted on the front and/or inside lid of the box.
A plaque on the inside lid is best for longer personalized messages, and custom plaques usually do not delay shipping of an order.
PLEASE NOTE: If a plaque is requested for the front, then the brass handle will be removed to accomodate the plaque.
